Moleskine City Notebooks

I’m a big fan of Moleskine notebooks. I’ve been using them for my travels since my second trip to France in ’03. Apart from the large size I used as a journal, I also bought a pocket size to use as my trip organizer. I filled it with addresses of shops I wanted to visit, restaurants I wanted to try and hotels and hostels in which to sleep. I took notes along the way of places of interest and the names of artists I discovered in museums. I did one for New York that I’ve used on two or three trips, one for Eastern Europe, and even a small one for London when we went for 5 days.

So when Moleskine announced their new City Notebooks I was very intrigued and excited. Now, after months of trying, I finally managed to get my hands on the one for Paris. They are not quite yet in wide distribution and the two places in town that have them were always out of the Paris edition. I eventually had to order it through Powell’s.

If you haven’t seen these yet their a brilliant little package. Included are maps of the city, street indexes, metro maps, blank pages for notes, and tabbed sections for restaurants, bars, shops, people, and various blank tabs for your own interests. One of the best bits, though, is the transparent sticky sheets that fit on the map pages so you can trace your routes or mark place of interest. I have all ready transferred all the things I marked on my Wayfaring map to my notebook maps and have also filled it with my own spots to check out.

Moleskine also has versions coming out for U.S. cities and I’m sure I’ll pick up the New York book, and maybe the San Francisco one as well. Hell, I might even get the Seattle one just for kicks.

I wouldn’t mind seeing some more general country books as we rarely only visit one city on a trip.

Update on the Server Transfer

Well it took a little longer than expected to transfer over the domain names to my new hosting service so I have not yet made the big move. I will, however, be doing that this weekend so if the site disappears for a bit or is a bit of a mess, that’s why.

Please bear with me as I make the transition.

The most immediate thing you will notice is the address bar will now say www.atravelogue.com/… instead of comcast or .mac.

If you have those pages bookmarked, I will ask you to redirect them to there new addresses. I will try and put up a forwarding page where the old pages used to be.

Thank you for your patience.

If you check in here and things are wonky our just not there please be patient as it will take a little time to get everything back up and running and all the links pointed in the right place.

The Strange Economics Of Rental Cars

There comes a time when you find yourself at the whims of the strange and convoluted rules of the travel industry, in which logic not only doesn’t apply, but has in fact been taken round the back and beaten into the shape of white is black, up is down and frogs are allergic to the color green. And so the round shape of your trip must conform to fit the star shaped hole provided.

Our original itinerary had us renting a car for four days, but as it turns out, it’s the same price, or cheaper, to rent a car for a week. And so things are set in motion, plans are altered and new schemes are worked out to accommodate this new information.

On the whole, this isn’t entirely a bad thing. Now instead of spending two nights in Avignon and one night in Arles, I think we will be either spending all three nights in Avignon (because there is a definite advantage to camping out in one place and day tripping from there) or one night in Avignon and two nights in Arles (because I’ve read that Arles is more friendly for cars). Right now I’m leaning towards staying put in one place. But that could change.

The other change will be driving from the Luberon to Nice instead of taking a train, which will allow us to stop along the way if we desire and frees up all kinds of time schedule wise.
